Fishing in Grand Cayman

Since Christmas I have been doing a little fishing here in Grand Cayman. It started out with the new rod and reel that my wife's parents got me for Christmas. I soon found out that fishing here was going to be a lot different than anywhere else I have even fished.

First of all it is almost impossible to fish on the bottom due to all the coral. It catches a hold of your sinker and hook and snags every time.

I snapped my first pole when I got a snag. Yep, snapped it right in half. I was so stunned that I hardly noticed the shards of wood and fiberglass that got lodged into my hand.

Fishing with a bobber is almost useless because of the waves and low visibility.

There are certain spots that the fish bite and you might as well forget about catching anything anywhere else.

At any rate I persevered and finally caught an exceedingly small fish the locals call a "grunt". I was quite proud to have caught it until I learned that it was the absolute lowest of the low of fish. I will continue my endevors though because that's what REAL fishermen do. Wish me luck. If you want to see the pictures of my grunt please check out my Facebook account.

Heroes Day Ceremony

So today is Heroes day in sunny Grand Cayman. We went to Heroes square and got to watch the Awesome Ceremony. The Governor was there as well as the Premier. It was very interesting hearing them speak about Heroes and how we need to go back to the high standards of our ancestors. One particularly interesting thing was when the Premier said that kids shoulden't be wearing their pants around their bottoms instead of their waists, It got the loudest applause of anything else he said. They openly sang church hymns and there was a mass choir that sang (I could have been a part of it except I didn't think I had the time). The National Hero of this year was a Lady who was Part of the Educational system. She looked very old. Watching the parade was also very interesting and amusing. the police band was quite good but I was more impressed with the John Hicks High School Band. They played the 007 theme, Hogans Heroes theme, Supercalifragilisticexpalidocious from Mary Poppins, Pirates of the Caribbean theme, and that "Hey now" song by Smash Mouth. All in all it a very unique experience.

Xerxes the hamster

Here are a few pictures of what I have been entertaining myself with recently. thats right I got a small fluffy creature. His name is Xerxes and hes a hamster. Miriam and I were talking about getting another pet but we didn't want a dog so we decided to get a hamster. Hes has allready bit me pretty good once, been swatted by the kitty, ate a hole in my favorite blanket, peed on both Miriam and I, doubled in size and tried to use jedi mind control to force me to give him popcorn.

This is his lovely cage where he runs on his wheel anytime past 1:00 am and eats and sleeps

Here is a picture of him trying hard not be eaten by cleopatra
This is a picture of the little Crystal light container he sleeps in.
here he is the day after I bought him

This is Cleopatras favorite past time these days.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures more to come.

Cartoons!

Recently I have been messing around in my spare time with the microsoft paint program. Here are a couple of the cartoons I came up with, let me know what you think.

This one is of an old idea I had for a cartoon in college. The original caption was a thought bubble above grandmas head that said "Goggles, check: Rocket skates, check: Bengay, check!"

This one is a recent idea I came up with when my wife Miriam was watching some Sesame St. videos on youtube. I noticed how in the "Rubber Ducky" song Ernie calls his ducky chubby every verse and this cartoon was born.

If any of you have made cartoons post them, or if you allready did let me know in the comments.
P.S. If you can't read the caption or you can't see the picture just click on it for a larger view.

Hunting!

So I finally went hunting for the first time in my life. now i know your probably all thinking, "what?? Hes never hunted before in his life??!" Yes I know I have lived in Ohio most of my life and I was raised in a family that hunts a lot, but alas, this was my first time.

So how was it? It was very nice. I went with my father-in-law in carrolton (spelling?). It was kind of interesting at first I was thinking that we would be togeather all day hunting side by side. But the first thing we did was split up. So I was on my own. So many thing were going through my mind like,
I wonder just how quiet I need to be?
should I walk right through the middle of this field or sneak around the edge?
Uh oh, these boots are NOT water proof.
Finally I saw a squirrel. I was standing in one place being very quiet when suddenly it came walking along searching the ground for food. I stood as quietly as I could and it came within a few feet of where I was standing. eventually it went on its way and I continued on. I finally did see some deer but I didn't shoot. I dont know if I was just too new or if I just didn't want to kill the beautiful things. all in all it was a very enjoyable day with several amusing little misshaps including making the dumb decision to try to walk through a thorn patch. Also there was the psych out moment when I thought I saw a deer laying down in some tall weeds but it turned out to be an old rusty oil drum. Do any of you have a funny hunting story? let me now!
